The Birmingham Youth Jazz Ensemble (BYJE) returns to the stage for the first time in over 20 years in a powerful reunion concert honoring their late founder and mentor, Jothan Callins.
This one-night-only performance brings together alumni from 1994–2005, uniting across the country to celebrate the music, teachings, and legacy of a jazz visionary.
✨ Sunday, February 22, 2026 – 5:00 PM At the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, BYJE alumni will perform Callins’ original compositions — many of which were never recorded — in tribute to the man who shaped their musical and personal lives.
The concert is part of the South Arts Jazz Road Creative Residency, awarded to trombonist Calvin Sexton, who is spearheading this project to preserve and elevate Jothan Callins’ impact on jazz and education.
